JACK BURKE JR.
CLASS OF 2019
Jackie Burke was the golfer’s golfer. He was a respected player and teacher and remains unparalleled as a spokesman and ambassador for the game. He won the Masters and the PGA in 1956 and did a lot for golf as the game was just coming of age. He also co-founded the legendary Champions Golf Club in northwest Houston with his close friend and fellow World Golf Hall of Famer Jimmy Demaret.
“What a guy,’’ Opie Otterstad said. “Maybe not the big splashy name like (Jack) Nicklaus or (Lee) Trevino or (Arnold) Palmer or those guys, but those guys all looked up to him. He did a lot for the game as it was still coming of age.’’
Otterstad‘s painting shows Burke, the U.S. captain, celebrating his team’s win over Great Britain and Ireland in 1973 at Muirfield. He’s held up by Billy Casper and Dave Hill and Nicklaus, Trevino and Palmer are all in the painting as well.
